Tony Abbott has returned from the frontline, saying the bushfires in northern New South Wales are among the worst he’s ever seen.

The former prime minister helped fight the blaze near Tenterfield with his Davidson Rural Fire Service brigade.

It’s one of 13 fires still yet to be contained.

Speaking with Alan Jones, Mr Abbott has described just how severe the emergency is.

“I don’t claim to be the world’s greatest expert on anything.

“But I think, for me as a firefighter, this is probably the worst firefront activity that I’ve seen since the 2001 Blue Mountains fires which obviously were very, very bad indeed.”
