The rate of police officers leaving the force in Queensland is higher than pre-COVID, it has been revealed.

9 News senior reporter Tim Arvier says it’s a problem for the state government in a youth crime wave, despite it being a similar story across the country.

“More police are leaving than pre-COVID, the attrition rate is higher … we are seeing that across a lot of industries,” he told Neil Breen.

“The problem is we are not being able to recruit enough police officers to actually fill all of those gaps, we are stagnating, maybe even going backwards on the total numbers of police officers.”

High-profile crimes such as the police shooting at Wieambilla and the inquiry into the force’s domestic violence response have all had an impact, he said.
