The massive safety flaw in proposed smoking crackdown

4BC Breakfast

A push by the state government to tighten up restrictions around smoking has copped backlash over a major oversight.

Under proposed laws, drinking would be banned in designated outdoor smoking areas (DOSAs) at pubs and clubs.

Queensland Hotel Association boss Bernie Hogan says while changes sound like a good idea at face value, it would create larger problems.

“There’s a lot of … small things that can catch you out,” he told Sofie Formica, filling in for Neil Breen.

“You can’t take a drink into the DOSA … so a girl’s going to leave a drink behind in a nightclub to go out and have a smoke.

“I don’t know about you but it doesn’t sound really brilliant about leaving unattended drinks there…

“We don’t just want to push this from one area of concern to another.”
