Young adults and those over the age of 60, are more likely to be living with others and less likely to be the breadwinner in their own homes in Queensland, analysis of population data shows.

The shift in the make-up of households in the Sunshine State will form part of the state’s housing summit later this week.

“It’s an interesting shift and this is really driven by the notion that, we know that Queensland population is growing, but I was really interested to see whether the growth in households was outstripping the population growth, indeed it is,” Dr Elin Charles-Edwards, a demographer from the University of Queensland, said.

She told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons the 2021 Census data shows both younger and older Queenslanders are “less likely to head their households than in 2016”.
