The Brisbane problem exposed by Australia’s World Cup ‘frenzy’
The hustle to set up live sites for the Socceroos’ match against Argentina on Sunday has exposed one of Brisbane’s biggest faults, Neil Breen says.
Premiers, lord mayors and councillors across the nation have hustled to make the in-demand locations a reality for fans after extraordinary scenes out of Federation Square this morning.
But even past close-of-business in Queensland, fans are still waiting for even one location to be announced in the south-east.
While Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner announced he was in talks with SBS about broadcasting the match in King George Square, there’s been no update since 9.30am.
“It looks like every other Council in Australia, and every other state and Premier, has worked with SBS already because they’ve already announced it,” Breenie said.
“The point is, other states make things happen. What happens in Queensland? We get bogged down in bureaucracy and mediocrity.
“We are so slow and so bogged down. We have to get with the program, honestly.”

Getting the live site set in stone isn’t the only problem with Brisbane’s sluggish approach to jumping on big events.
There will only be one venue where fans can watch the match with a schooner in hand this weekend: the casino.
“So what happens is, people are in venues, then they go to the casino,” Breenie said.
“You remember the casino, staring down the barrel of hundreds of millions of dollars in fines? That joint.”
Mantle Group area manager Jack Nicholson told Breenie the state government is generally pretty strict on its liquor licence rules.
Venues are only licenced until 3am, he explained. Businesses can be granted exemptions six times a year, but only once a month and only for special occasions.
“Unless it’s a music festival, or something that’s going over two or three consecutive days,” he said.
