TikTok has launched a campaign to reframe young Australians’ perception of tanning after doctors raised the alarm on a new trend.

The now-banned #sunburnchallenge hashtag, which had more than 300 million views, saw young users showing off their worst sunburns on the app.

Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) medical co-directors Professor Georgina Long and Professor Richard Scolyer told Ray Hadley the trend presented “huge” health risks.

“Every 30 minutes, someone in Australia is diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer,” Professor Long said. “And we haven’t even talked about the other skin cancers!

“Melanoma is the commonest cancer in 20- to 39-year-olds. And not to mention, the impact on ageing, which also plays well to the young people.”

Searching for anything related to summer, tanning or the sun on TikTok will now bring up a message that says, “Tanning. That’s Cooked”, as well as information about the dangers of tanning.
