‘Tax on socialising’: Climbing cost of beers being addressed at the federal election
Queensland Hotels Association CEO Bernie Hogan has told Scott Emerson on 4BC Drive that a tax cut in the price of beers would provide a timely boost for the hospitality industry.
Lobbyists have taken action on the climbing cost of beer, launching a campaign aimed at halving the tax of draught beer in the federal budget, with some success.
In response, Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has agreed to discuss the push for $150 million of tax relief of beers poured in pubs.
“It doesn’t matter whether you’re in regional Australia or in the big cities people rally around their local, whether its a bar or a pub or a club, its a place where people go,” he said.
“For the last 35 years, every six months, that tax on socialising has kept going up. So to pump some more confidence in people to get out to their hospitality industry, we’ve asked for a reduction in the tax.”
