Shark numbers ‘worst’ in trawler’s 25 years, huge shiver caught on camera

Bill McDonald

A trawler fisherman says shark populations have grown to the highest level he’s ever seen.

Speaking with Bill McDonald on Brisbane Live, 9News weatherman Luke Bradnam said he’s heard fisherman are losing upwards of three-quarters of their catch to sharks.

“What I’m hearing, Billy, I spoke to a trawler fisherman,” he said. “He says the shark population is as bad as he’s ever seen in his 25 years of fishing in south-east Queensland waters.

“They’re prolific at the moment. They’re in our estuaries, in our waterways and definitely offshore in large numbers, Billy.”

Luke said the fisherman shared footage taken just the other day of a shiver of sharks hanging around a boat off the coast.
