The Wynnum-Manly Seagulls have addressed concerns about a potential move away from its spiritual home at Kougari Oval and major redevelopment plans after a passionate campaign from supporters.

Last week, 4BC Drive aired concerns from former State of Origin player Craig Greenhill who said the oval was the “heart and soul” of the club.

In a lengthy statement from the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls, Wynnum Juniors and Wynnum-Manly Leagues Club, officials say booming rugby league participation and supporter numbers have led the clubs to investigate “strategic opportunities”.

“This has included investigations into moving the juniors away from Kitchener Park to a more expansive location to ensure every boy and girl who wants to play rugby league for Wynnum Manly gets the opportunity to do so,” the statement read.

Another possibility is the Seagulls moving to Kitchener Park and building a new 10,000-15,000-seat maximum capacity stadium and high-performance training centre.

The juniors would still play matches at the redeveloped Kitchener Park.

CEO of the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls, Hanan Laban, said it was a big project and a big undertaking for the juniors and seniors.

“As a result it’s created a lot of community chatter and community excitement, and part of those discussions within the community out here in the bayside, caused some details we needed to clarify and address,” he told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports on Tuesday night.

“Ultimately the project is really positive for the community.”

He said Kougari Oval was something special and there was no plans to redevelop the oval.

“Even if we are to proceed with the project as we hope, we still plan to play select games throughout the year at Kougari.”

He said there is pressure on existing facilities.

“The stadium itself, at the moment we are looking at a concept at Kitchener Park but that will be predicated on the juniors being able to find a facility that us bigger and better so they can grow and expand as well.”
