Save Kougari: Locals’ passionate fight to save rugby’s ‘heart and soul’
A potential move for the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls away from Kougari Oval has ignited an impassioned campaign from some fans and supporters, who fear it could impact the strong junior competition.
Kougari Oval on Wondall Road, made famous by ‘The King’ Wally Lewis, has been the home of the Seagulls since 1967.
Die-hard fans of the club have heard there are moves to shift the teams that currently play at Kougari to nearby Kitchener Park where junior teams play.
Former State of Origin and Wynnum-Manly Seagulls star Craig Greenhill helped form the Save Kougari group.
“What we’ve heard is they are going to build a stadium at Kitchener Park and it would be a stadium and training field and training facilities for the seniors, six teams and leaving Kougari Oval,” he told Scott Emerson.
“Kougari Oval was our heart and soul of rugby league in Wynnum-Manly.
“They are talking about building a 10,000 feet stadium at Kitchener and our crowds are 2,000, so we don’t want a stadium that’s empty all the time.
“The main thing we are very worried about, we are passionate about our rugby league here, but also we are passionate about local footballers.
“We’ve got over 40 teams that play at Kitchener, junior grassroots teams, that are going to be kicked out of Kitchener.”

The Wynnum-Manly Seagulls told 4BC Drive off air they are considering all the details for a possible move away from Kougari Oval in the future.
The club says they are still compiling the information the club needs before any future announcement, which it hopes will be in the best interests of the club, its players of all ages and the local community.
