The Prime Minister’s approval ratings have taken a hit as he continues to face criticism over his handling of the bushfire crisis.

The latest Newspoll results, published in The Australian, show Scott Morrison has suffered an eight-point drop in his personal approval ratings since December.

They are the worst results the Prime Minister has recorded since he assumed the leadership in August 2018.

The Coalition has also fallen behind Labor on a two-party-preferred basis for the first time since the election, and Labor leader Anthony Albanese has moved ahead as preferred Prime Minister.

It comes after Mr Morrison accepted criticism of his decision to take a family holiday to Hawaii amid the bushfire crisis, admitting on Sunday he could’ve handled the situation better.

Nine Radio’s national political editor Michael Pachi says the preferred PM result is particularly surprising, as Scott Morrison has historically been viewed as the better leader.

“The fact that Anthony Albanese has been able to turn that around fairly dramatically… will worry people within the Coalition.”
