Retired NRL star facing the biggest hit of his life

Ian Hindmarsh took plenty of big hits during his NRL career but none as big as this.

The former Eels and Raiders player is in the fight of his life, as he battles to keep the family farm alive and running.

After retiring following the 2007 Grand Final, Hindmarsh moved back to the bush where he’d bought and built a dairy farm at Cowra.

His younger brother, Rugby League great Nathan Hindmarsh, took a different path, choosing not to follow the family’s 170-year history on the land.

Ian is fully aware his decision may not have been the smart one but says he’s not going to give up.

As he battles drought and the major supermarkets, Alan Jones asks, “If you could do one thing, what would it be?”

“Lift milk prices in supermarkets,” says Hindmarsh.

“It would be as simple as that for dairy farmers.

“If all dairy prices got lifted in supermarkets, that would flow back to us and we’d be able to go on our way.”

Alan also asked Ian about the Prime Minister’s suggestion that people shouldn’t be panicking.

“We’ve been panicking since January last year, not knowing what to do.”
