‘Quite considerable concern’: CHO’s plea to older Queenslanders
Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard has issued a plea for Queenslanders aged over 70 to get their COVID-19 booster shots.
There were 13 deaths recorded today, 9 from aged care.
Only 3 had received a booster.
“What I can say is 70 per cent of Queenslanders above the age of 70, have in fact received the booster,” he said.
“We are seeing a disproportionate number of deaths in older people who have not received the booster, and this is quite considerable concern to us.”
He urged anyone who was eligible to get a booster to get one.
“We know that third dose makes a big difference to your immune response.”
Meantime, Deputy Premier Steven Miles says 32.5 million rapid antigen tests have been ordered while some 4.6 million have already arrived.
There have been some delays at Sydney Airport, he said.
“We anticipate receiving 1.2 million over the next couple of days.”
The RATs will be distributed into schools on the weekend, before school starts on Monday.
Unlike NSW and Victoria, there will be no requirement for parents to regularly test their children, but RATs will be made available to parents, if their child shows symptoms.
