Queenslanders thanked for easing pressure on the energy grid despite heatwave

Neil Breen

Energy providers are thanking Queenslanders for heeding the call to reduce their power consumption amid the short-lived heatwave.

There were concerns that there would be pressure on the energy grid last night during the evening peak, as Queenslanders turned on their air-conditioners amid the very humid conditions.

But according to Powerlink which supplies 5 million customers with electricity, supply cleared with only a few hundred mega watts to spare.

Chief Executive Paul Simshauser told Neil Breen there was a good response.

“It was a good response from businesses and households, as you know we put out the call yesterday just for people to be a bit thoughtful of their electricity use because we knew the system would be tight.”

He asked Queenslanders to do the same tonight, between 5pm-10pm.
