Residents in the town of Tara in the Western Downs are being told to prepare to leave as a bushfire threatens properties.

The slow-moving fire is travelling on Butterfly Road towards Mary Road.

The advice level has been upgraded to a watch and act.

Authorities say conditions could get worse quickly.

Some properties are currently under threat and authorities are warning the fire is likely to impact the community later today.
