Political row over dam levels as QLD braces for triple La Niña

Neil Breen has defended Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner’s suggestion to lower dam levels ahead of concerns Queensland will be hit with a third La Niña event.
The state government knocked back the suggestion, despite fears of another flood season.
The south-east was hit by a rain event in February, tripling the capacity of Wivenhoe Dam and leaving thousands of homes and businesses under water.
“There is a ding dong battle between the Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and the state government over dam levels,” Neil said.
Cr Schrinner questioned if authorities should be looking at proactive dam releases.
“It’s a question that I am not the only one asking, many residents have been asking the same question,” he said.
“Places like Enoggera Reservoir which feeds into our local creek systems, that’s full, it is 100 per cent full as of today.
“Do we need to proactively releasing water from the dams?”
Neil said Wivenhoe Dam is already 91 per cent full.
Transport Minister Mark Bailey hit back at Cr Schrinner, saying he should “concentrate on his job” including the lack of evacuation centres in March which he labelled a disgrace.
While Neil agreed, he said it was a valid question from the Lord Mayor.
He said he “firmly believes” it’s time for a discussion on dam levels.
“I think the people of Queensland want to talk about the dam levels.”
