A man who found himself in the middle of a police chase yesterday says he’s grateful his family is safe after the ordeal.

Three males, aged 28, 17 and 16 allegedly forced their way into Graeme Carmichael’s home at Cleveland and took off in a black Mercedes.

Mr Carmichael told Bill McDonald he was at work when he got a call from his sister, saying some people were trying to get into the home.

He said he raced home to try and intercept the group and ended up pursuing them in his car.

Police eventually took over the chase in what some have described as the “slowest police chase” ever on the M1.

The alleged crime spree ended south of the border, with three the three males arrested and charged.
