Toyota Camry: more defined styling

David Berthon

Toyota showed off its new fully-imported 8th . Generation Camry this week in nine models– the first imported Camry in 30 years following the closure of its Melbourne-based manufacturing facility last month. The new Camry sedan is available with three petrol powertrains – carryover 2.5-litre four, a new 2.5-litre petrol/electric hybrid and a revitalized 3.5-litre V6 which replaces the outgoing Aurion. There are nine models in total, with the entry Altise nameplate making way for the Ascent, pricing kicking off $1,200 dearer at $27,690. The new Camry import is 55mm longer in the wheelbase, its sits lower and has a lower seating position in a body that’s less bland but a little divisive in appearance, especially in the bolder higher grades. Now built in Japan the 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol and 2.5-litre petrol/electric Camry’s feature revamped six speed automatics, while the two 3.5-litre V6 variants, come with a new 8-speed auto. Service intervals are now 12 monthly with the first five services $195 each. All models Camry’s now feature a new electric park brake plus electric power steering, also gaining new safety technology with a pre-collision warning system, autonomous emergency braking and lane departure alert with steering assist. Also, a rear-view camera, hill-start assist control, active cruise control and auto high beam. This latest Camry also has more defined styling, more so on the higher grades. Toyota claiming they expect to lose some sales with the new import but expect to gain more private sales over traditional fleets.
