‘Should have been amended’: Calls to overhaul QPS mental health powers

The Bondi Junction inquest has raised questions about the workload police here in QLD are dealing with, and their powers to act.

Former QPS Superintendent Jim Keogh told Bill McDonald on 4BC Mornings, “This [legislation] should have probably been amended some time ago.”

“Under the Mental Health Act, there’s got to be an imminent risk of the person self-harming rather than harming anybody else.”

“Rightly, the police have defended themselves here, indicating the legislation is all they can work by,” Keogh continued.
