Recent problems in Sydney & Melbourne highlight concerning problems in Australia’s building industry
Chris Stoltz, Professor of Engineering Practice at La Trobe University joins Michael to discuss the recent building issues of Sydney’s troubled Opal Tower & Melbourne’s Spencer St tower which certainly have one thing in common.
Their recent troubles have served as a warning to all that over the past decade as hundreds of residential towers have been erected at great speed across our cities and inner suburbs.
Clearly in some corners have been cut…work has not been to standard… inferior and dangerous material has been used…and compliance checks & inspections have not always been up to standard.
That’s not to say by any means that every building is a potential death trap, but it seems that in the rush to meet a surging demand driven by a population boom we’ve let our guard down here & there… and now the cracks are beginning to show.
