May sales show small SUV’s rule

David Berthon

Official new vehicle sales in May were  a record with sports utility vehicles or SUV’s up by nearly 25,000 sales. Small SUV sales this year are up by a whopping 65 percent with MG’s value packed small ZS model taking sales leadership year to date from Mitsubishi’s popular ASX. The success of the Chinese-owned  MG brand continues unabated with the small MG ZS the fastest growing model on the Australian market with sales up 431 percent. Some will question how a Chinese SUV could reach such dizzy heights when there’s a swag of excellent  Japanese and Thai SUV’s in the market. The MG octagon on the grille has had a huge influence, but so to the build quality – definitely not cheap and cheerful – so too, value for money and overall inclusions. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder six speed auto ZS Essence  for $25,990 drive-away with a seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty a very compelling argument.
