FULL SHOW: Weekends with Peter Fegan – Sunday, 25th August 2024

Peter Fegan

On the show: Feegs rounds out your weekend with a show dedicated to the bush.

It’s been a big week in news, with Feegs discussing the big changes in the CFMEU – with top brass across all states being fired left, right and centre and a rally due to be held in Brisbane in the coming week. We hear more about one of Australia’s biggest concert promoters throwing their support behind plans to build a brand new stadium here in the River City. We hear your feedback on these issues.

It’s also been a big week politically. For the Sunday Breakdown, Feegs is joined by Katter’s Australian Party Leader and Member for Traeger, Robbie Katter. From the appointment of former QLD Police Union boss Ian Leavers to a new Cross Border Commissioner role, to the CFMEU rallying across Brisbane in the wake of leader sackings; Robbie gives his insights into the big issues.

In Local issues today: we continue the conversation around the Fire Ant eradication programs that are causing issues within SEQLD communities. Reece Pianta is the advocacy manager from the Invasive Species Council, a body formed in 2002 to “seek stronger laws, policies and programs to protect nature from harmful pests, weeds and diseases”. Reece discusses the eradication program in its current form, the specific materials and baits used to treat fire ants and responding to community concerns.

Elsewhere on the show: Following the National Bush Summit in Townsville during the week, one of the issues highlighted was around resilience and the needs of rural communities. However, there are some who don’t want to be called resilient, and for good reason. Professor John Cole OAM joins Feegs to break this down further and discuss how we can better understand and support regional and rural communities.

Yesterday we broke the news about a devastating fire that ripped through a nearly century-old outback pub – the Baralaba Hotel in QLD’s banana region. But there is some positive news for the community – the annual Baralaba Big Bash is still going ahead as planned next week. Baralaba Mayor, Councillor Nev Ferrier, joins Feegs to talk about this devastating news, what can be expected from the Big Bash and what life is like in Baralaba.

Champion boxer Harry Garside gained prominence at the Tokyo Olympics, winning Australia’s first Olympic boxing medal in three decades. Beyond the ring, Harry actively breaks down barriers and imparts a crucial message: never shy away from letting your unique light shine. Harry joins Feegs at Midday to talk about how he’s travelling post-Olympics, his foray into ballet and his new book ‘The Good Fight: Boxing, ballet and breaking stereotypes’.

PLUS: 4BC Sports Report Sam Leckie provides an extensive update on the weekend action, and we look ahead to the coming week with your long-range weather forecast.
