Driver’s licenses – not a level playing field.

David Berthon

NSW drivers are paying heavily from the state Governments decision to  remove mobile speed camera warning signs with record fine revenue boosting government coffers. The number of fines issued in February rose to 33,634, up from just 1859 a year earlier – revenue for the month $6,248,000. March fines however dropped by over 10,000 perhaps indicating the new unmarked cameras may have tempered driver’s behaviour. Quite clearly though many motorists will lose their licenses under this new system. What I do find disturbing is the anomaly pointed up recently in the case of Sam Burgess who since 2010 had committed 32 mobile phone and speeding offences but had received no demerit points because he was driving on a British license – as such he did not lose his license as the offences did not get recorded. Let’s hope the Government urgently addresses this loophole on overseas licenses as it’s not an isolated case.
