Documents reveal Brisbane City Council were told to replace Story Bridge footpaths over five years ago

Gary Hardgrave

Newly revealed documents claim the Brisbane City Council had been urged to replace the footpaths of the Story Bridge and failed to do so over five years ago.

Leader of the opposition in the council, Councillor Jared Cassidy, noted the council has gone ahead with fast-tracking the Kangaroo Point bridge at the same time the footpaths needed replacing.

“I just don’t know what the decision-making process was going through the lord mayor’s head,” he told Gary Hardgrave.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Brisbane City Council accused Councillor Cassidy of “cherry-picking”.

“What these expert reports show is that we’ve been closely monitoring the condition of the Story Bridge footpaths for a long time now … The latest report received yesterday states the paths will need to be replaced ‘in the next two to five years’,” they said.
