Concerns mount for the condition of a second key bridge in Brisbane

Gary Hardgrave

Following the Story Bridge, an expert has warned another key Brisbane bridge will soon need maintenance as it reaches middle age.

Queensland branch president of Engineers Australia’s Transport Australia Society, David Hayward, says there’s a risk the Captain Cook Bridge will be “asked” to do more than what it can handle.

“The bridge was originally designed for 43,000 daily trips … it ended up having to carry, today, 110-120,000 trips, which places even more pressure on that piece of infrastructure,” he told Gary Hardgrave.

Mr Hayward noted the bridge recently had an upgrade.

“In 2022, which I think is … a reflection of recognising that increased pressure on the bridge,” he added.
