One of two prisoners who escaped from Kempsey jail has crossed the state’s northern border.

Phillip Sampson and Kurt Reynolds have been on the run since escaping from the mid-north Coast Correctional Centre on Friday.

Queensland police have found 35-year-old Sampson after he allegedly broke into a Queensland home and attacked the 71-year-old resident with a hammer before stealing property and the man’s car.

He’s been charged to face a Brisbane court this morning.

Reynolds is yet to be located.

Corrective Services is investigating the circumstances surrounding their escape at Kempsey.
