Netflix names Brisbane as set for ‘Boy Swallows Universe’ adaptation

Brisbane has claimed another production coup with the Netflix adaptation of hit novel Boy Swallows Universe to be filmed in the River City.
Trent Dalton’s international best seller has been snapped up by Netflix, following on from a critically-acclaimed stage adaptation in 2021 by Queensland Theatre.
A five-month filming schedule will begin in Brisbane next month, to feature a raft of suburbs on the southside.
“The best, guys, is Darra,” Dalton told Laurel, Gary & Mark. “I spent six years in Darra, that beautiful suburb out in the west, the south-west.
“And then it’s places like Sunnybank and right through the CBD, it’s the Brisbane City Town Hall, it’s the clock tower.
“You’re kind of working your way through the suburbs of Brisbane, as the film production will, right through to the heart of Brisbane.”
Dalton said an iconic Vietnamese restaurant has agreed to help bring scenes from the book to life.
“I wrote about that restaurant, I had that restaurant in my head when I wrote the book,” he said.
“There’s this amazing kind of woman who runs that place who sort of features in the story.
“Any of your listeners who have been out to Darra will know this place.”
