Neil Breen has shared an insight into the difficulties of policing under domestic violence legislation, in the words of a long-serving, retired police officer.

The officer, whose identity was not aired, contacted Neil after he detailed a horrifying case study on Brisbane Live.

Mary’s story was featured in the report into Queensland police responses to domestic and family violence.

She was the subject of abuse for decades, and was eventually murdered by her husband after she sought help from police.

“It was absolutely heartbreaking,” Neil said.

In response to the harrowing story, Neil received a lengthy email from a former police officer.

“Today I am giving my editorial over to that retired police officer who wrote to me, in terms fairness.”
