The state government has shut down reports that children are becoming wards of the state because their parents can’t find anywhere to live.

The Courier Mail today reports that authorities are removing children from families because their parents can’t find appropriate accommodation.

It’s a claim the Minister for Children and Youth Justice, as well as the department’s Director-General have categorically denied.

“We have heard reports about that,” PeakCare executive director Lindsay Wegener told Jess Millward on 4BC Afternoons.

“They have given me assurance this morning that the children are not being removed from their families solely on the basis of homelessness.”

Mr Wegener expressed his concern that homeless families may avoid seeking housing help because of fears that their children may be removed by authorities.

“When that kind of message is being given to families, that they should be fearful of seeking help, that is not at all helpful,” he said.

“The worst thing is that when families are struggling, they become hidden from view and we can’t see what’s going on for that family.”

He added that while Minister Leanne Linard assured authorities aren’t removing children from their families, the department isn’t absolved of all responsibility.

“The government … [needs to do all they can] to make sure that children have their basic necessities of life met.”
