Medical interns to join QLD frontline, push for kids to get vaccinated
Queensland has recorded 11,600 new cases of COVID-19, as 795 new medical interns get set to join the frontline throughout January.
The double dose vaccination rate in Queensland is sitting at 89.3 per cent.
Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the double dose rate for 12-15 year-olds is still under 70 per cent.
“The numbers are still too low. These kids are going back to high school very soon.”
Ms D’Ath said it the junior doctors were starting in an “extraordinary, anxious time”.
Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard clarified that of today’s 15 deaths, people who had tested positive around the time of their death, two were aged in their 60s, nine in their 80s, four in their 90s.
Four were unvaccinated, four had received one dose, five were double jabbed and two had been given boosters.
Dr Gerrard also said there are now 829 in Queensland public hospitals for COVID-19, which he says marks a “very significant fall” in hospitalisations particularly on the Gold Coast.
There are 48 people in ICU including 15 people on ventilators.
