How cyclones get their names

sofie formica

Tropical Cyclone Freddy has formed off the coast of Western Australia, but experts are still watching two other tropical lows.

One of them is closer to Queensland in the Coral Sea with the Bureau of Meteorology saying it’s likely to develop into a cyclone late tomorrow.

It’s not expected to directly impact the coast, but it could bring strong winds and large swells, and dangerous surf conditions.

Rockhampton-based weather forecaster Mike Griffin explained to Sofie Formica how they are named.

“Freddy was the next one off the rank and the West Australians won that one hopefully the Queenslanders will win the next one with Gabrielle coming up,” he said.

He said the next will be named Herman!
