Senior police have expressed their dismay over Queensland’s rising road toll, including the tragic death of former Test cricketer Andrew Symonds.

He died in a single car rollover near Townsville on Saturday night.

Another three men also lost their lives on the roads on the weekend, as authorities mark the start of Road Safety Week.

The state’s death toll has now hit 120 as of midnight last night, more than 35 per cent higher than the same time last year.

Road policing acting inspector Donna Stewart says it’s a horrific statistic.

“If we keep going this way, we would tracking at 325 deaths on our roads in 2022,” she told Scott Emerson.

“We haven’t seen more than 300 people die on Queensland roads since 2009, so it’s horrific.

“It comes down to that personal responsibility and people taking account for their actions on the roads and making the right choices.”
