A Queensland court has lifted a strict supervision order for one of Queensland’s worst serial sex offenders.

Robert John Fardon is no longer subject to electronic monitoring, curfews, mandatory counselling or living restrictions, following a Supreme Court ruling.

Three psychiatrists have said there’s a low risk Fardon will carry out more crimes and shouldn’t stay under the state’s watch.

The 70-year-old will remain under some police supervision for the rest of his life under laws changes late last year.

Fardon was first convicted in 1967, then aged 18, for sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl.

In 2003 became the first person to be jailed indefinitely in Queensland under new laws targeted at repeat sex offenders.

QLD shadow attorney general David Janetzki tells Luke Grant Fardon “will always pose a risk to the community”.

“He has a 50-year track record.

“He held up and raped at gunpoint, a 12-year-old.

“We are dealing with the most serious of offenders and we believe there will always be a risk.”
