‘Going nowhere fast’: Report warns traffic is set to get worse in Brisbane

A federal government report has unveiled a worrying forecast for the future of south-east Queensland when it comes to traffic and transport.

New data suggests commuters should expect huge spikes in traffic congestion in the coming years unless improvements to infrastructure are made to keep up with a booming population.

A report by the Bureau of Communications, Arts and Regional Research says the south-east’s population will grow to 5.41 million by 2024.

It claims while people will need to live farther from the Brisbane CBD, they’ll still need to work centrally, which means lengthy commutes into the city.

“Unless something is done, it’s just going to be going nowhere fast,” 4BC traffic reporter Olympia Kwitowski told Jason Dasey on 4BC Summer Drive.

“I think there’s probably 10 roads I could list off that need to have more than two lanes of traffic to head into the city.”
