‘Game-changer’: Gabba to become ‘vibrant’ heart as part of City Deal plan

Three levels of government have signed off on a $1.8 million major infrastructure City Deal for south-east Queensland.

The Commonwealth will contribute $667.77 million dollars in funding, with $618.78 million dollars coming from the state government and $501.62 million dollars from the Council of Mayors.

It’s hoped the huge investment will address SEQ’s booming population, provide more jobs and ready the region for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

Committee for Brisbane CEO Barton Green says they were “delighted” by the announcement.

“We’re all clear, all parties are clear, this is version one of a two decade planning framework, so there’s $1.8 billion worth of commitment to projects and investigations which are all about better planning for the significant population growth our region will be facing over the next 20 years,” he told Scott Emerson.

“So it’s a really fabulous investment in the future of our region.”

$450 million dollars alone has been allocated to the Brisbane Metro Woolloongabba Station.

Mr Green says it’s a critical project.

“The Gabba itself is just going to become such a vibrant part of our inner city life, and now the interconnectivity between road and rail and their forms of transport that will be using that particular space is a game-changer,” he said.

“It’s a critical piece of infrastructure and we’re delighted to see it there.”

He says the specific sequencing of projects, including timeframes, will be developed over the coming weeks.

“By the end of this year we will know exactly what’s happening, when and that’s really when we get some great markers for what’s happening in our region.”
