Gabba redo: How QLD can learn from other world-class stadiums
Little is known about the plans for a major $1 billion redevelopment of Brisbane’s iconic The Gabba stadium, which will be the centrepiece of the 2032 Olympics.
The state government is yet to release plans but could draw on world class venues such as SoFi stadium, which held yesterday’s NFL Super Bowl.
ASM Global Asia Pacific chief executive, Harvey Lister, says it has some limitations on the site, but he’s excited for the re-development.
Asked about what the government should learn from SoFi Stadium’s redevelopment, he said there “were a lot of things” to be learnt.
SoFi Stadium will be the home of the LA Olympics in 2028.
“Firstly, it cost reportedly $5 billion US dollars plus, there’s a good learning, we don’t need to spend that amount of money to have what Brisbane is going to need,” he told Scott Emerson.
He said Allegiance Stadium in Las Vegas, which was completed during COVID, the home of the Raiders, cost about $2 billion US.
“I am not of the view that the govt needs to spend that much money to achieve the outcome they are going to need for the long term use of the stadium of the Gabba.”
