Dodgy cabbie crackdown having an impact, taxi industry says
A crackdown on dodgy cabbies failing to start their meters, price gouging and negotiating fares is having an impact, the industry says.
The government has been running compliance checks and surveillance on taxi drivers, after reports drivers were increasingly doing the wrong thing in the wider Brisbane area.
Taxi Council Queensland CEO Blair Davies said the crackdown was working to clean-up the industry.
“We are seeing drivers stopping the practice, but we are not confident that it’s finished completely and certainly encourage the compliance officers to keep out there doing that job, catching the offenders and prosecuting them,” he told Peter Fegan.
But he said they’ve been telling the government “cabbies are taking matters into their own hands” because the regulated taxi fares aren’t keeping up with cost-of-living-pressures.
