‘Disappointing’: GPs given no notice over free flu jab plan

Queensland GPs were blindsided by the state government’s announcement of the free flu vaccine initiative.
Yesterday Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk made the announcement that Queenslanders would be able to get a free flu jab from today until June 30.
But it came as a surprise to the medical community.
The Premier said it was a pre-emptive strike to ease pressure on the hospitals.
The state government says flu cases of influenza A are already doubling by the week, with more than 4000 already identified and at least 160 in hospital for treatment.
Chair of AMA Queensland council of general practice, Dr Maria Boulton, says they were advised the practice would be reimbursed for anyone who turns up to get a flu jab.
“I found out through the media as well, it’s not an uncommon thing through the pandemic that we get to find out through the media which is really disappointing considering GPs give the bulk of the flu vaccines,” she told Scott Emerson.
Dr Boulton met with Queensland Health today to “iron out” some of the issues and questions from GPs about the rollout.
“They were apologetic, the fact is this cannot continue, we need to be warned of things before they announce them.”
