‘Deliver for generations to come’: Treasurer confident on QLD’s Olympics promise

neil breen

Cameron Dick says he is confident Queensland can deliver on the 2032 Olympic Games, vowing the operational costs won’t come at a cost to taxpayers.

The government revealed the $7 billion price tag for infrastructure two weeks ago, after a deal was struck with the federal government.

Neil Breen questioned the Treasurer on the cost impost to Queensland.

But Mr Dick said he was “very confident we can deliver the Olympics” for Queenslanders and for the international community.

“The operational costs won’t come at a cost to taxpayers, we have said that all along,” he told Neil Breen.

“It’s about $5 billion to run the Olympics and Paralympics, so we will be doing that and that will be raised through sponsorships, television rights, $1 billion from the IOC.

“But we also said we needed to upgrade these facilities for our state for the future.”

The Gabba is an ageing stadium from the past decade he said, describing it as “not fit for the 21st century”.

“If we want to compete with Adelaide, Perth and Sydney for the big events, big shows, big concerts, we need to have world-class venues here in Queensland.

“That’s why I am really pleased during the pandemic, when the whole world was rocked we put our hand up and we had the courage to go for … not just the biggest sporting event the Olympics and Paralympics, but the biggest event in the world and that is going to deliver for generations to come.”
