Commissioner’s vow to Ray Hadley as she survives damning report

Queensland’s Police Commissioner has made a steely promise to Ray Hadley in the wake of a scathing report on the service’s culture.
Katarina Carroll was thrown a lifeline by the Premier after an inquiry into domestic and family violence repeatedly blamed a “failure in leadership” for sexism and racism in police ranks.
“It’s very difficult reading,” the embattled Commissioner told Ray Hadley this morning. “The case studies are very difficult, the comments about leadership are very difficult.”
Ms Carroll, who has held the job since 2019, said the pandemic disrupted earlier plans for reform in the service but insisted she’s not using COVID-19 as an excuse.
“We need to get on with reform and deal with it,” she continued. “With the recommendations and with funding, this will give us an excellent opportunity to really expedite that reform.
“You and I will have this conversation in a year or two’s time and know that it’s better.”

Ray was confident he’d be taking the Commissioner up on her offer for a future conversation but stopped short of anticipating what it would entail.
“She’ll be judged from this day on from her performance,” he said.
“As is normally the case, what happens here is if she’s not up to it, the police contact me, as they have done previously.
“Rest assured that if she doesn’t follow through on the promises she’s made to the state of Queensland, and to me on this program, well, she’ll be under the pump.”
