An alliance between members of the community and Queensland police to catch crooks caught on residential CCTV cameras will be expanded to the Gold Coast.

The community camera alliance initiative gives local residents and businesses the chance to voluntarily register their CCTV cameras as part of a network used to investigate crime.

Queensland Police acting chief superintendent Rhys Wildman said the program is being expanded, to include Yatala and Varsity Lakes.

“The really important component is actually getting out cmm involve in these preventative strategies,” he told Scott Emerson.

When a crime occurs, police can reach out to the community who have enrolled in the initiative, and have access to their CCTV.

He said so far, it’s been very successful to catch crooks, as well as helping them provide evidence in court and get a conviction.

It saves time, and also gives police information almost in “real time”.
