‘Built on a floodplain’: Lord Mayor’s priority to heed off devastation of future floods
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has welcomed jointly funded flood resilience program, but says he wants to see the details on what properties will be eligible.
A 4BC Drive listener asked about the criteria for the flooded property buyback scheme, but the Lord Mayor says it’s not yet clear.
“What is unclear at this point in time is what the criteria will be going forward so I’m really keen now to sit down and nut out the details on what properties will be eligible, which areas will be eligible,” he told Peter Fegan.
“Look there’s a big amount of money that’s on the table but what we don’t know is where that’s going.
“Is that something that’s going to be spread across the entire state, is just going to be the areas that were flooded recently? Where’s it going?”
He says in the city of Brisbane, 20,000 properties were flood impacted.
Asked about how Brisbane can be better flood-proofed in the future, he said it would be a challenge.
“I don’t think anyone would be realistic to say we could flood proof Brisbane, we are built on a floodplain … short of moving large parts of the entire city it’s about making sure we have the right policy settings to manage the risk.
“It’s one thing to have roads flooded, that’s something we can manage from time to time, but properties flooding, that’s a different story, we’ve got to give priority to properties not flooding, businesses not flooding.”
