A Brisbane Oztag referee says he is not sure he will return to the game after allegedly being hit from behind and winding up in hospital with a bleed on the brain.

Jason Fernie had been officiating a social Oztag game in Rocklea.

He was allegedly hit from behind, and recalled waking up in hospital, with no idea what had happened.

He’s been refereeing for 22 years, and says he has never experienced anything like it.

“Nothing like that before, that’s just uncalled for … nothing like this has ever happened,” he told Peter Fegan on 4BC Drive.

“It was very very scary what happened, I am just happy to be alive to tell you the truth, it could have been a lot worse.”

Police are investigating.
