spencer howson

Thousands of Queenslanders are expected to flock to shops today to snap up a Boxing Day bargain, in one of the biggest days on Australia’s retail calendar.

Around the country, shoppers are expected to spend $23.5 billion this Boxing Day.

In Queensland, there are predictions of a $4.8 billion spend in the two weeks over the two week sales period.

With no COVID-19 restrictions, hospitality venues are bracing for a 30 per cent increase.

In Brisbane, Westfield shopping centres in Chermside, Carindale and Mount Gravatt will all be open from 9am-6pm.

Professor of Retail Marketing and Consumer Behaviour at QUT, Gary Mortimer, says stores will start to see a shift in the way people spend their money.

“Last week it was all about last minute gifts, food and alcohol, we are now shifting to manchester, bedding, homewares, kitchen appliances … apparel is the big one, surprisingly retailers are out there clearing their summer apparel getting ready for the new ranges coming in the next month or so,” he told Spencer Howson filling in on 4BC Breakfast.
