‘Been through enough’: Call for reprieve for flood-hit properties
There’s growing calls for the state government to delay land valuations in the wake of the February floods that wreaked havoc across the south-east.
Updated land valuations were released for some Queensland councils last week, as the Sunshine State experiences a property boom.
With land valuations taking place, it could mean rates and land taxes will rise.
Real estate agent Dan Brisbalt from The Agency at Sherwood says some people’s homes have been obliterated by the floods.
He sells properties in areas that were directly affected such as Rocklea, Oxley, Sherwood, Kenmore, Richlands and Chelmer.
He says it has impacted property prices.
“It’s never an easy conversation to have, especially for people who have been hit twice, the fact that they say it’s a once in a 100 year flood, and it’s happened twice,” he told Peter Fegan filling in for Scott Emerson.
He says while the property market has been booming, it’s also the second time in just over a decade the region has been subject to such devastating floods.
“I think it’s ridiculous they are going to increase rates in those areas, I think these poor people have been through enough.”
