Aviation warchest to lure airlines, tourists to the Sunshine State

Scott Emerson

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced a $200 million partnership with the Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Cairns airports to lure international tourists back to the Sunshine State.

The deal will focus on travellers from Singapore, Japan, South Korea and the United States, and then eventually also Canada, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Brisbane Airport Corporation CEO, Gert-Jan de Graaff, said the aviation warchest will go a long way.

“This is a true partnership, so what the airports have committed to is 50/50 funding of that war chest we will invest like for like in airline aviation attraction into Queensland,” he told Scott Emerson.

“And what we are going to do, is we are going to work together with the government on business cases and special arrangements to see if we can get our airlines back into Queensland sooner rather than later.”

He said for airlines, it’s a big call to restart operations to one of the four airports.
