Australian mateship fighting social isolation

Mateship is an important pillar of the Australian community, especially when it comes to fighting loneliness and social isolation.

This week the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) is calling attention to the benefits of mateship across the Men’s Shed community.

Men’s Sheds play an important role in preventing social isolation by providing a safe and welcoming place for men to work on meaningful projects for the local community.

AMSA Executive Officer David Helmers tells Steve Price first and foremost the shed is “a place where blokes can go and work on projects together”.

“But the real objective of Men’s Sheds is that we’re preventing social isolation.

“For a lot of blokes, their workplace is their social world.

“And when they’re out of work they’re at high risk of social isolation.”
