Anthony Albanese refuses to attack Prime Minister over bushfire absence

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese says he’s not interested in politicising the bushfires in the wake of the deaths of two volunteer firefighters.
Mr Albanese spent the morning serving breakfast to firefighters on the frontline of the Gospers Mountains blaze, and describes the moment Bilpin firefighters heard about the loss of their colleagues as ‘tough, but inspirational’.
“They’re all feeling it… many of them said to me they see themselves as one family, and when you see them together you get that immediately.”
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has come under fire in recent days for holidaying with his family during the devastating fire season, but Mr Albanese has refused to make further comment while the crisis is ongoing.
“I’ve had some criticism for not attacking the Prime Minister, but I just think politicians yelling at each other is not what’s needed at the moment.
“What is needed though is some responses, including the response about how we provide support for volunteer firefighters.”
Mr Albanese says Scott Morrison rejected his proposition to consider “some form of compensation” for those giving up their time and their day jobs to fight fires.
