ACCC Chairman calls on a fairer way of paying for our roads
ACCC Chairman Rod Sims says we need to change the way we charge for road usage considering electric car owners do not pay a petrol tax.
He argues that with the increasing amount of electric vehicles on the road, the cost of road usage is not being distributed fairly.
Equally, motorists with new fuel-efficient cars pay less fuel tax than those with older models.
Mr Sims tells Ross Greenwood there needs to be a conversation about the way Australians pay for roads.
“At the moment we pay by petrol excise… but there are other ways of charging.
“You won’t be paying more if we come up with another method of charging… the petrol excise will go down or disappear.”
