Greens councillor Jonathan Sri has raised the idea for a trial for a 30km/hr speed limit in Brisbane’s West End.

He raised the idea at the council meeting on Tuesday night, which was rubbished by Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner.

Chandler ward councillor and civic cabinet chair for transport, Ryan Murphy, said the council wouldn’t be putting in a blanket 30km/hr speed limit.

He said while council supported lowering speed limits in high-crash rate spots, it had to be reasonable for drivers.

“Our view is that the vast majority of drivers will not view a 30km/hr blanket sped limit throughout the CBD as being a credible speed limit, so they won’t obey it,” he told Scott Emerson.

He said it was just another “thought bubble” from Councillor Sri and the Greens wanted to “punish motorists”.
